So, the National Park Service is running a contest called Pic Your Park. To participate, you visit a park, post a selfie on Instagram, and then you earn points. Whoever has the most points wins.
This leads us to our time in D.C. Given the historical significance of our country’s capital, there are quite a few monuments, memorials, and historic sites scattered throughout. We tried to check out as many as possible, not only for the sake of the contest, but for our own enjoyment. We’ve both been here before, but not in a long time, and never together. Overall, it was a hot and sunny day, but at least there were scattered showers to quell the heat.
What started as a hiccup in our plans, turned into opportunity. You see, we were originally only coming to this area to see a baseball game: The Washington Nationals vs. the Philadelphia Phillies. The plan was to catch the day game (1:00 PM) and then drive to Pittsburgh as an overnight stop toward our next destination, Detroit. However, the MLB put a hitch in our plans by changing the game time to 8:00 PM. This gave us the opportunity to visit D.C. in the daytime, but left us with a very late night drive. The cool thing is that the game time was changed so that the Phillies were on national T.V, which means they are playing well. The uncool thing is that they lost. And there was a rain delay. And D.C. is dumb and stops running public transportation (admittedly very nice public transportation) to its stadium around 10:30 PM. even if there’s a night game. So we ended up leaving during the delay, in the 4th inning, around 10:00.
We caught the remainder of the game on the radio. It was disappointing to lose, but 2/3 against the Gnats is a series win. We’ll take it.
Anyway, we drove all the way to Pittsburgh in the middle of the night, but we made it to our hotel and slept like babies.
