Day 38 - San Francisco

So, apparently, you need to buy tickets in advance to go to Alcatraz Island. Like, way in advance. For some reason, we did not realize this until we were at Yosemite the previous day. So, the ferry was completely sold out.

However, they hold about 50 tickets per day for standby purchase only. The thing is, we read that people begin lining up to buy these tickets at 5 AM, and we were about 5 hours away from San Francisco.

So, we did what anyone else would do. We drove 3 hours, slept 5 hours, woke up at 3 AM, and drove 2 more hours to get in line. 

When we arrived at 5:03 AM, we thought we were in the wrong place. Where's the big line? There's no one here! Then, one single woman stood in front of the ticket booth. We were there, we realized, and we were second in line!

So, we waited until it was 7:30 AM and everyone behind us also got tickets, but ours were more special because we stood in line for 2 and a half hours.

Really, it was worth it, because we saw a beautiful sunrise, played Love Letter, and had fun chatting with people in line. 

Alcatraz was amazing! It is full with so much history (and giftshops).

Then, we did what any other tourist would do in San Francisco. We went to the Full House neighborhoods!

Finally, we drove across the Golden Gate bridge in immense fog and went to the Muir Woods (through a poorly run shuttle system) before continuing our journey towards Oregon. We had a good night's sleep in Williams, CA, but not before catching a fireworks show over the McDonald's arches (for some reason?). We played Disney music on our phone during the fireworks because it was lacking that extra oomph. 

What a day!
