Day 9 - Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park was one of the places we were most excited to visit on this trip, and we were not let down. We left our Wildwood-esque hotel bright and early and hit the road. We drove straight to our campground to set up camp before exploring the park. The campground was right inside the park and situated on Manzanita Lake. We decided to do the scenic drive from one end of the park to the other, while stopping at various highlights throughout.

Lassen Volcanic NP is home to 4 different kinds of volcanoes: shield, composite, cinder cone, and plug dome. Lassen Peak, the namesake of the park, is a plug dome volcano that most recently erupted in 1916. We were able to drive up real close to the peak, where there was still snow on the ground. We continued the drive past lakes, overlooks, and hydrothermal areas.

We returned to our campsite for a delicious meal of steak, potatoes, and corn on the cob, and then we ventured to the shore of Manzanita Lake to stargaze.
