Day 2 - Pittsburgh and Kennywood

One benefit we have on this road trip compared to our previous trips stems from our savviness with credit cards. On our first road trip, we actually lost my debit card, which was our only means of payment at the time. So, that was a major hiccup. This time, however, we have more credit cards than we can count due to our love of chasing bonuses. It’s good to have these in case of emergency, but it’s the rewards points that have truly changed the way we travel. No more stays at Airbnbs or the cheapest hotel we can find on Tripadvisor. We are Hyatt enthusiasts now (Discoverists, formally), due to the generous points transfer policy from Chase. So, you will find us staying at a lot of Hyatt hotels on this trip.

That means we had no choice but to rank all of the included breakfast offerings. Here’s our ranking of the Hyatt Pittsburgh South breakfast:

Hyatt House Pittsburgh Airport South

  • Hours - 3
  • Food options - 4
  • Food quality - 4
  • Coffee quality - 3.5
  • Ambiance - 4.5
  • Highlights - Not crowded, French toast sticks with powdered sugar

Today was another work day, so we didn’t really get started until late afternoon. But then, the school year was officially over! Hooray! Summer vacay!

After work, we went to Kennywood amusement park. It was our first visit to this park, and we had a blast! It’s a cute little park, including some fun coasters, walkthroughs, and dark rides. My personal favorite was the Noah’s Ark walkthrough, a funhouse based on the popular biblical story. I don’t know what they were thinking, but it was weird and wonderful. The highlight of this park visit, however, had to be the Bites and Pints event they were running. Eight different countries were represented by their own food and drink tents around the park’s lagoon. This was clearly a little nod to Epcot, which was cute. We paid $50 for 12 food samplings, and almost all of it was DELICIOUS! The highlight had to be the quesabirria from “Mexico” or the Brazilian steak. Yum!

Since we didn’t get started until after work, we had a late drive to Cincinnati, Ohio. But, Amy’s a queen, and we made it there without issue! Except for the Dunkin’ we stopped at closing early! Not cool!
